Student Internships
Undergraduates or Graduate students can apply to be an Intern with the LGBT Resource Center. Type of Internships vary each year based on LGBT Resource Center needs. Intern positions are paid monthly stipends, work 10 hours per week, and are held for the entire academic year.
1.3 Academic Units
Undergraduate students can inquire about volunteering in the LGBT Resource Center for 1.3 academic units of pass or no pass. Requirements for 1.3 units include completing 30 hours of service and producing a reflection paper in one quarter. For the latest requirements and updates on receiving 1.3 units, contact the LGBT Resource Center staff directly.
Leadership Retreats
All students are encouraged to participate in annual or quarterly LGBT Resource Center Leadership Retreats. Leadership Retreats vary from day-long to weekend sessions, and may cover communication, team-building, high ropes coures, identity development, action-planning, etc.
The LGBT Resource Center welcomes students, staff, or faculty who are simply interested in associating and getting involved with the Resource Center. Volunteer service can range from one-time event volunteer to weekly or ongoing service within the Resource Center. Contact LGBT Resource Center staff with interests or ideas for volunteering.
Student Involvement Scholarship
Purpose: Scholarship is intended for a continuing student who has both benefited from and contributed to the LGBTRC. This merit scholarship provides financial assistance to students currently enrolled at UCI who identify as part of the lesbian gay bisexual and transgender community and participate in the activities of the UCI LGBT Resource Center.
Bruce Wade Scholarship
Purpose: To provide financial assistance to UCI students who contribute to improving the campus environment for lesbian gay bisexual and transgender students.
Dennis W. Cabaret Scholarship
Purpose: the Dennis W. Cabaret Scholarship was created in 1998 to promote higher education and scholastic achievement coupled with community-based activism within the lesbian gay community in Orange County, California.
James J. Harvey Dissertation Fellowship
Purpose: To provide financial assistance to graduate students studying male or female homosexuality, including but not limited to sociological, medical, political, historical and legal ramifications or to the study of life and work of James J. Harvey.
Undergraduate Organization
Irvine Queers (IQ) was founded in 1972. IQ are Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, Ally, and Questioning students from UCI and the local community. IQ is a social, educational, political, and service organization, with the purpose to enhance the Queer & Ally experience at UCI.

The Queer Graduate Caucus (QGC) is a graduate student initiative at UCI supporting a queer-friendly university environment. The QGC serves as a catalyst for social and academic networking on the UCI campus for students, faculty, staff, and their Allies by sponsoring social events, lectures, discussion groups, and political activism. The QGC also provides prospective graduate students with information about the UCI community and resources the in Orange County area.

S.A.M.E.
SAME (Student Alliance for Marriage Equality) is a club for students, faculty, and staff to learn about, be politically active in, and spread awareness of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender political issues. While a primary focus is on marriage equality, we strive for advancement in all LGBT political issues.
Orange County
Queer life in Orange County centers around Laguna Beach. The Koffee Klatch on PCH is a good place to start. West Street Beach is also a popular hangout in the summer. Costa Mesa has the Tin Lizzie Saloon. Christ Church of Laguna in Lake Forest is a non-denominational, LGBT affirming church.
Long Beach
Long Beach is the fifth largest city in California and home to a vibrant gay community. It's only 25 minutes from UC Irvine during non-rush hour times. There are many bars and clubs as well as LGBT run businesses and a community center. The Library, a popular coffeehouse, is a good starting point. Executive Suite hosts ladies night on Saturdays and Ripples has a weekly drag show.
Los Angeles
Los Angeles is approximately 40 miles from Irvine (under an hour in good traffic). Most of queer Los Angeles centers in the neighborhoods of West Hollywood and Silver Lake. The Abbey and A Different Light Bookstore are popular destinations in WeHo along with Akbar in Silver Lake.
San Diego
San Diego is approximately 84 miles from Irvine (1 hr 20 mins). Queer San Diego centers in the neighborhood of Hillcrest. Grad students have recommended Bourbon Street, Lei Lounge, Flicks, and Numbers in Hillcrest. The adventurous go "au naturale" at Black's Beach near UCSD.
Palm Springs
Palms Springs is a popular desert resort that's only 93 miles from UC Irvine (1-2 hours). It's great place to visit for the weekend or for spring break and a good place to avoid in the summer unless you're willing to risk melting in the desert sun.
